Out of all the teams on campus, one seems to stay out of the spotlight. The Basha/Perry Hockey team has been around for five years, yet many students are not even aware the team exists. With eleven games under their belt this season, the team is looking to improve as well as gain more attention.

As a whole, the team is made up of players from Perry, Basha, Casteel, Chandler and Chandler Prep High Schools. With players from five different schools, it can seem like a disadvantage out on the ice. However, “we have great leaders in the locker room and overall a great group that really works well together,” Head Coach Steve Klein said.

“I honestly think that having all these hockey players from different schools is very refreshing,” agreed Senior Braxton Gibson (Perry).

The team gained their third win of the season in their most recent game against Notre Dame Prep on Oct. 23. With a 3-2 win and now a record of 3-5-3, the players have a boosted moral.

“Anytime you get a win over a quality opponent like Notre Dame, it’s huge for the confidence,” Klein said.

During the game, the team was outshot 39-19, but were able to put three of their shots in the net. Sophomore Carson Abercrombie (Basha) scored the first goal of the game, followed by goals from freshman Zach Brumm (Casteel) and senior Justin Sorenson (Basha). The goaltender, senior Zach Klein (Perry), only allowed 2 goals, adding another big contribution to the team’s win.

“I think every one of us wanted that win and we knew we could get it done,” Abercrombie said. “I could feel the energy and I’m confident that if we keep the energy and confidence level up, we will get the results we want.”

The team hopes this confidence will carry over into their next game on Oct. 30, against Hamilton at 6:30 at the Chandler Ice Den.

“Going into the Hamilton game, we have to change nothing from [the Notre Dame Prep game],” Klein said. “It will take another all around solid team game to be successful.”

Going into the rest of the season, the team is hoping for more support from their schools.

“I think if anyone comes out and watches this team play, they will see the skill, the excitement, the passion that these kids play with and they will be hooked,” Klein said.
