Pumas blast Blue Devils in complete game blowout
Perry’s first game of the 2014 football season started with a bang with a 53-18 drubbing of the Sunnyside Blue Devils.
The game was started with a quick touchdown by the Pumas (1-0) followed closely by another from the Devils (0-1) and several well-timed runs by senior quarterback Austin Nightingale. Running the ball twice within the second quarter, Nightingale took it ten yards after receiving the kick from Sunnyside and later scoring a touchdown run of 52 yards.
It seemed to be a cat and mouse game for both teams until the end of the half when pumas started to pull ahead 19-12.
The defense was swarming and the offense was impressive and in the second half, Perry solidified itself by outscoring Sunnyside 27-0.
“We got some confidence in the guys who have never started here,” assistant coach Chance Clatterbuck stated after the game.
He expressed his pride in the new players introduced into the Friday night scene such as freshman defensive back Kenny Fultz, making an impacting interception in the fourth quarter leading to yet another Puma touchdown.
As coaches and the team say this game will set a precedent for the rest of the season, Perry’s fans have no option but to wait and see how the remainder of the fall season will turn out. Clatterbuck talked out the team’s future saying, “This was a great start, but we will have to win the next three too.”
The Pumas will look to improve to 2-0 next week as they travel across the Valley to Sandra Day O’Connor.
