Track gears up for the 2013-2014 season
After a record shattering season, the Perry men’s track team has high expectations for the upcoming 2014 season. Five records were broken and three of those record holders are returning this spring.
Sophomore Cade Burks has the 800 meter record by 5 seconds and has made a name for himself as one of the fastest underclassman in the state.
Seniors Terren Blanchard and Jackson Spilsbury helped the 4x100m relay to a new school record and Spilsbury also anchored in the 4x400m relay. The sprinters are looking very strong this year with Senior Justin Rodriguez to run in the open 400m, and the 1600m relay. Blanchard is focused on breaking 11 seconds and placing at state in the 100 meter dash.
Seniors Dallin Thompson and Gunnar Albrecht have goals to finish the season this year. Thompson was kicked off the team mid-season and Albrecht had to leave because of a season ending injury.
Mitch McKay is working hard to qualify for the 800m for state. His training partner, Cade Burks says,”My goals for this year are to stand on the podium in both the 800m and the mile, I hope Mitchell and I will both run the 800 at state.” McKay and Burks have worked hard in the offseason to ensure that they meet their goals.
Distance crew members John Rolfe and Tanner Brown are in their fourth and final year of track, and are looking to receive the most improved award.
Head Girls Coach John Lowery has taken control of sprints, assuring that the girls workouts will be very challenging. Lowery is a very experienced coach and will set the bar high this year.
Junior Gabby Ybarra expects to reach her ultimate goal of qualifying for state in the 3200m and the 1600m. Junior Kami Campbell also has similar goals to beat her personal records in the 3200m and her favorite event, the 1600m.
