A Chance To Play
Sports are a vital part of the high school experience, and the Unified Sports program is no different. The team started during the 2011-2012 school year and has been developing ever since.
“In the beginning, we only had basketball,” head coach Nora Boettcher said. “Now we have flag football and track and field.” It is not just the sports they play that are changing; each year there are more teams to compete against.
Unified Sports teams have become more state wide and include other schools not in the Chandler Unified School District. Each team works on a partner-athlete system, partners practice and play in games with the athletes. “It is much more than just a sport,” coach Jose Bracamonte said. The friendships formed extend off the field.
“It brings everyone together.” partner Chloe Lafleur said. Lafleur realizes the importance of the team, as it gives every student the chance to play their favorite sport.
Each athlete receives a Varsity letter at the end of the season. “It’s my moment to shine.” Christopher Hooks said. Hooks enjoys the flag football team, and loves snapping the ball and scoring touchdowns.
The flag football team will play again on Tuesday Oct. 29 against Basha, during the half time of the junior varsity football game.
The team will continue participating in basketball and track for the remainder of the year. To participate as a partner, contact Boettcher.
