With the season coming to a close, the boys volleyball team is extremely happy with their state ranking.
Throughout the season, the team experienced some close games, but were able to come out with the win in the end. The boys ended up with a winning record of 16-2, only losing to Hamilton and Desert Vista.
Senior Alex Berghorst reflected on the season, saying, “I think it went really well, it started off with our first loss against Hamilton and we just grew on it and figured out what lineups we need to run.”
The Pumas traveled to Tucson for their first two games of playoffs, beating higher ranked teams, Cienega and Rincon. The team made it’s way to the state quarterfinals, before losing 3-1 against the second ranked team in the state, Highland. The team is hoping to make it even further
With several of the top players leaving this year such as Berghorst, Connor Martin, and Mitch Harris, the team is going to have to work hard to recover from those losses.
“I’m going to miss all my teammates and the fun energy that we have,” Berghorst mentions. “I’m definitely going to miss playing volleyball at Perry.”
The team is going to miss their seniors, but they are excited about next season.
“We had a great season, one of the best I have ever had. I am going to miss the seniors, but also I am looking forward to next season and I am confident that we will do well,” junior Logan Miller states.
After this year’s successful season, the boys are hoping to continue improving and make their way to playoffs again next year.
Junior varsity wraps a perfect season
The JV boys volleyball team had a great season, ending undefeated with a record of 16-0.
“Obviously it was a very successful season, the guys worked extremely hard and they were mentally strong too,” JV coach Brandon Keeling explained. “Even in tough games they were able to focus on what they needed to do.”
With eight seniors leaving on varsity, they are going to need current sophomores and juniors to step up and come ready to play at varsity level. The bar was raised and the current JV boys will need to keep up the intensity.
The team is hoping to continue their success into next year and improve on their skills for the 2013-2014 season.
