With the season now more than half over, the girls have been doing well and seem to be on their way to a successful postseason.
Varsity coach Kevin Chapin provides the record, ”We’ve already won more games than we did all last season; currently we’re 21 and 5.” Ending the 2011-2012 season with only 19 wins and 14 losses, the team has surpassed last years record, still with several more games to go. Falling into a small slump for a bit, the girls pulled themselves out after playing against Desert Ridge and winning 6 to 4.
As for the rest of the season, everyone’s goals seem to be the same; getting to state.
“The state championship is our goal,” Chapin expressed, “ we’ve gotten this far with hard work and being scrappy and we believe heavily in conditioning and working out.” Ranked 10th in state, the Lady Pumas are not far from reaching their goal.
“I don’t really have any personal goals for myself but I would love to help my team win out the remaining games of the regular season and do everything in my power to push us far into the playoffs,” Laynee Gomez, Junior, told of her expectation for the rest of the season.
The whole team has contributed to getting this far.
“Everyones done really well, way better than last year. We’ve won 19 games already and last year by this time we had only won around 10,” Junior Sabrina Nieto stated.
However, several players tend to stand out while on the field.
“Consistently throughout the season, Brittany Hopper has done her best. Lindsay Hffron just came back and has been hitting 400’s. But we are where we are because of Jillian [Leslie], and Laynee Gomez. She’s been a rock star,” Chapin said.
While every team has ups and downs, this team is determined to make the rest of the season strong. With five games left, the girls are determined to do everything they can to reach their goal of getting to that State Championship game.
