Devon Ryan might be the best kept secret in coach Kevin Chapin’s lineup. Or, after Saturday’s extra inning spectacular in the opening round of the 2013 postseason, perhaps was the best kept secret is more appropriate.
In a contest in which No. 16 Corona del Sol struck out 24 Pumas hitters, it was Ryan who had Aztec pitcher McKenna Isenberg’s number, as she collected the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 12th inning – her second RBI of the day. She completed the contest with three hits, and willed the No. 17 Pumas to a much-needed playoff win.
Next up for Perry (25-7) is No. 1 Mountain Ridge (29-2), who is a perfect 9-0 at home in Glendale. First pitch is at 4 p.m. and PHS will likely be facing Mountain Lion senior Sai Foley, who leads Mt. Ridge in ERA and strike outs.
Pitching is not Mt. Ridge’s bread and butter, however; it is the four players they have who are hitting over .500. The winner will advance to the double-elimination portion of the state tournament.
