As the team gets ready for another exciting season, they are working hard to be successful and make it to state. Last year, the team had a winning record of 19-9 and this year they are working to improve that record.
Junior Jalen Cross has been on varsity for two years, and has also played club ball during that time. He is always trying to improve on his skills, whether its on the court or in the gym. Cross is excited to be a part of the team again this year and continue improving with his team.
When asked about why he enjoys playing volleyball, Cross said, “I like to show my skills, and how high I can jump.”
Cross hopes to play volleyball in the future, he wants to get a scholarship and continue playing the sport that he loves.
After the team falling short of making state last year, Cross is confident about this season saying, “We have that chemistry already since we’ve played club together outside of school, so in practice we’re going to build more of that chemistry and try to build our skills so we can come out victorious against other schools, like Hamilton.”
Skills are not the only thing that the team is trying to improve, they are also trying to develop a strong bond to work better together on the court.
“We are working on playing as a team, rather than everyone playing by themselves individually, we need to play as a unit,” Cross said.
Varsity coach Brian Pomerantz in encouraging with his team, always pushing them to work harder and be the best they can be. He is open to letting the guys try new positions, and wants to make all of them well rounded players.
“He takes time to work with you, and will make you better at several skills rather than just one. He doesn’t limit us,” Cross said.
With their first few games coming up against Hamilton, Higley, and Marcos de Niza, the team hopes to come out strong with a win.
