Wrestling season for the year 2012-2013 has been a great season for all the wrestlers. The wrestlers won seven out of eight meets, brought home a trophy from Apache Junction and performed great in Wisconsin over winter break. Head varsity coach Darren Johnson states, “I always expect them to win. Now that we aren’t the new guys, I expect us to be one of the better teams every year.”
Last year, only five wrestlers went to State. This year, six wrestlers are continuing on to State. “Get into State to do anything great,” Johnson states.
Principal Dan Serrano knows what wrestling is like. His son, senior DJ Serrano, plans on going to Westpoint with and plans to wrestle or play football. Serrano states, “with wrestling comes making weight, getting. ringworm and impetigo… It’s stressful as a parent.”
Serrano said that being a parent and going to all the games/matches makes them learn the sport themselves.
DJ, as well as Arch Ratliff, Aaron Ratliff, Justin Parada, and Logan Arredondo are advancing to State.
[Arch] Ratliff will be attending BYU and plans to go into Civil Engineering. BYU does not have a wrestling team, so he plans on wrestling for club.
Although some of Perry’s best and favorite wrestlers are leaving and continuing on in their lives, Johnson knows the wrestling team next year will be ready for anything.
