Although the boys soccer team did not get off on the right foot when they played against Basah, when it came down to the game against Desert Ridge the boys knew exactly what to do to get the win. With a final score of 5-1, it is fair to say that the loss against Basha pushed the boys to try their best.
“We had a rocky start, but I think a lot of the younger players are starting to understand how the program works and they are getting better,” captain Niyi Soetan, senior, answered when asked about how the season has been so far.
The team may have had a rough start, but they did not show it when they played against Highland. With a score of 2-1, it goes without saying that it was a close game.
For senior Kwaku Asare the win against Highland was more meaningful than some of the other victories.
“Scoring the two goals against Highland was honestly the highlight of my birthday. The first goal didn’t feel like much, I just felt like I got my team back into the game. It didn’t hit me until the second goal; it was the ultimate 18th birthday present.” Asare said.
After the win over Highland, the boys’ record stood as 2 wins and 1 loss.
When Tanner Hedger, sophomore, was asked what he believed the final record is going to be he replied, “I think our record is going to be 9-3, we’ll lose to Hamilton twice and we’ll beat Basha.” Whether this will come true or not is yet to be determined.
In order to turn the season into a success, Soetan commented saying, “We definitely have to work a lot harder than we’ve had to work before, mainly because we’re more pressed for talent this year, so state playoffs are up in the air. It could go either way, but I think it will be alright.”
The puma boys have high hopes for the season, however they realize that success is not going to come without hard work and dedication.
