Netflix may be the industry standard…but is it the best?

When people think of TV streaming, Netflix is the first company to come to mind. Following a switch from DVD mail service to streaming in 2007, Netflix has grown exponentially and paved the way for a whole new sector of the TV and film industry. Although Netflix is the “OG” and the industry standard for streaming, is it really the best? With the advent of newer services such as HBO Max, Peacock, and Paramount+, Netflix has been stripped of its extensive and iconic catalog. At the same time, companies like Hulu and Apple TV+ are taking the lead on must-watch original content. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most major streaming services right now and how they stack up to industry standard, Netflix.

Netflix

Although Netflix has lost some of its best and most popular shows, they still harness the power to bring the world together over their content, most recently with Bridgerton, Inventing Anna, and Emily in Paris. Even if the content is not the highest quality, it is still FOMO-inducing and can be hard to drop.

Base Cost: $9.99/month

Exclusive Content: Stranger Things, The Crown, Orange is the New Black

Notable Shows: Criminal Minds, Breaking Bad, New Girl

Hulu

While their original content can be hit-or-miss, their overall catalog is a refreshing break from Netflix’s backbone shows. Hulu seems to have a better grasp than Netflix on NBC and ABC sitcoms, documentaries, and also provides access to live TV and sports.

Base Cost: $6.99/month (Ad Supported)

Exclusive Content: The Handmaid’s Tale, Only Murders in the Building, The Dropout

Notable Shows: The Mindy Project, Killing Eve, Modern Family

Prime Video

Although their catalog might be the most vast, it seems to be a whole lot of shows people don’t watch. Content comes and goes without warning, and their interface is not visually pleasing and a little bit more difficult to navigate. One good thing about this is that the price includes every part of Amazon Prime–not just the service.

Cost: $14.99 (Included in Amazon Prime membership fee)

Exclusive Content: Fleabag, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Upload

Notable Shows: Psych, Life in Pieces, How I Met Your Mother

Apple TV+

Although this service seems to have limited options, every single one of the shows included are incredible and high quality. There’s something for everyone–comedy, drama, thrillers–and they’re all well thought out, expertly cast, and carefully crafted. This service is severely underrated and the perfect option for those who think they’ve watched everything.

Cost: $4.99

Exclusive Content: Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Severance

Notable Shows: This service only includes original content.

Disney+

Of all the streaming services, this one has the most family-friendly content. They have every Disney show and movie under the sun including Disney Channel Originals and long-time classics. Occasionally, some movies are even sent directly to the streaming service instead of premiering in theaters. If you miss the Marvel and Disney movies that once graced Netflix’s catalog, this service might be the right one for you.

Cost: $7.99

Exclusive Content: The Mandalorian, WandaVision, Loki

Notable Shows: Phineas and Ferb, Hannah Montana, Lizzie McGuire
