Homecoming themes are traditional across most high schools. They add a feeling of community and togetherness to events that would otherwise be plain. Though some might find them redundant and regard them as unnecessary or “an excuse to decorate”, there are many reasons to appreciate them.
Themes give the sense of unity and school spirit that homecoming themes highlight. These themes bring students into an experience worth sharing with their peers. Whether it be the “Roaring Twenties” or “Hollywood Glamour” it provides a common structure that stitches the grades and social groups together with inclusivity and new shared memories with peers. This joint involvement is valuable in schools because often collective groups create barriers among students. A well-chosen theme acts like a form of social unity; it allows everyone to be involved and interact with others, without fear of division or separation.
Homecoming themes allow creativity and self-expression. They make students more imaginative in regards to decoration, attire, and planning for activities. The process may be captivating for some students who may feel disconnected from others and are opposed to engaging at school events. This also gives them a memorable experience. An outlet like this gives students something to be proud of and gives them satisfaction with their accomplishments. These things often bring students together, can act as the start of new friendships, and even lead to long lasting relationships.
Some may argue that homecoming themes are unnecessary because they can be misinterpreted or simply ignored. This can be true, but homecoming themes are optional, they sometimes aren’t followed but that’s okay. Oftentimes themes don’t have to be followed but instead are suggested for those who don’t already have a general idea of what they would like to wear. These themes also add a bit of excitement to the dance and also anticipation to see others through creative environments. This could turn it into a boring and normal school event to a special night of interactions and unique experiences. Homecoming themes can also be useful for allowing students to express themselves, dress up, and enjoy an unforgettable event.
Creativity is something that can be used in a person’s day to day life and can even be used after high school. No matter what path a person may go down they can always rely on creativity to add uniqueness to their efforts. It’s a thing that adds a pop of color to life. As Walter Anderson said, “It is only when we take chances, when our lives improve.” Taking chances and trying new things is a part of life, one that should be utilized. Maybe the spark of a person’s creativity could be traced back to simple things, like homecoming themes.
