Point/Counterpoint: Proposition 206

December 15, 2016

Prop 206 just passed in the recent Arizona elections and the minimum wage will rise eventually. The minimum wage will be effected right at the start of 2017 and it will effect our high-school jobs.

Prop 206: A family’s dream

Prop+206%3A+A+familys+dream

All someone wants to be able to do is provide for their family comfortably in a world where that is a hard task in today’s economy. People with minimum wage jobs aspire to do the same, but under the current wages it’s virtually impossible.

Every family deserves the opportunity to live a life where they don’t have to always worry about how they’re going to pay for their basic needs. A hard working person, no matter the job, should make a wage good enough to live at the threshold of living.

Many people may argue that these jobs aren’t meant to support a family, that these jobs are meant for high schoolers or just to bring in a little extra money.

In some instances, a job that pays minimum wage is all that a person is able to get. This could be because they didn’t get a college education, or maybe they went to prison and that’s the only job they could get. You never know why someone is working that job, and chances are they aren’t working there so late in life by choice.

Prop 206 will raise up the minimum wage to $10/hr at the start of 2017 and then gradually raise it up to $12/hr by the year 2020. It will also provide employees the right to paid sick time.

The current minimum wage is $8.05/hr and that adds up to roughly $17,000 annual income for a full time job. This was forcing some parents to work multiple jobs in order to put food on the table for their family. Also, the paid sick time is just as important because now employees can miss work when truly sick instead of coming in and spreading his/her sickness to customers just because they can’t miss out on the money.

Plus, this will benefit the economy around the state due to the fact that people will finally be getting more money to spend.

This proposition will benefit every community by bringing more money into the loop for families and the economy as a whole.

Prop 206 raising prices

Prop+206+raising+prices

With the 2016 Presidential election, many states proposed ideas that they felt would help those living in the state. One of these propositions was Proposition 206 which would raise minimum wage.

Some Arizona citizens are rejoicing at the fact that minimum wage will be raised, but they shouldn’t be.

At the start of the year 2017, minimum wage in Arizona will be raised from $8.05 to $10 then in the year 2020 it will be raised to $12.

With the raising of minimum wage, prices for goods, products, and services will increase because of the need to gain more to be able to pay workers and taxes.

With the raising of minimum wage, families who are struggling and need financial help this can benefit them.

Parents who struggled to get a well paying job and had to settle for a minimum wage job or multiple jobs will be positively influenced by this wage change. They now can earn a living without having to live paycheck to paycheck.

Living paycheck to paycheck is a constant problem for people with minimum wage jobs. Not being able to have some luxuries and having to only use money for those things that they absolutely need.

Small business with small amounts of workers have to get creative with how and what they spend their money on and how they are going to pay their workers.

With this raise in wage, workers are now getting more money which will force the owners of businesses to raise prices to make up the difference.

Business will have to cut hours and possibly cut employees which will leave many without jobs. If these small business can’t come up with the money, they go under. This will leave more and more without an income and will cause them to have to scrounge more for money and having to not spend money on luxuries but needs.

Not only is this bad news for small business owners, this is also bad news for consumers. Raising prices now will make people have the same struggles as if the prices and minimum wage was not raised.
