Homecoming theme underwhelms students

For those of you who are not up to date on the latest news, this year’s homecoming theme is the Fire Within, which is based on the Rio Olympics.

But there is one thing wrong with that theme; the timeliness of it. I mean, hooray Rio Olympics!

But why? Why was it chosen for our homecoming theme? It is a high school dance, not an after party for Michael Phelps.

Last year, the theme was Star Wars, and the timeliness was perfect. The next movie was coming out Dec. 2015, basically making the theme a precursor for the movie. The dance had mostly everyone pumped to wear their Star Wars gear either at the dance or during the spirit week.

By the time the dance rolls around, the Olympics will be over. Sure people will still be gloating about how many gold medals they won and how many times they are going to fake their retirement until they actually retire, but no one will be competing.

Yes, I am aware of the fact that the Summer Olympics only happens every four years, but so does the presidential election. However, you do not see anyone celebrating the election as a homecoming theme.

I believe the students of Perry should have a say in deciding the theme. It seems that we are at an impasse; the school is evenly split between pretending to tolerate the theme, and loving it like it is the coolest thing since sliced bread.

We should try something more timely than the Rio Olympics – The Fire Within.

Something like Harry Potter, considering the new book just came out almost a few weeks ago. People will be raving about the new book, not about who won in the Olympics.

As an alternative, we could even have a Disney theme. Or we could also have a Halloween themed homecoming since Halloween is coming up quick.

Homecoming is supposed to represent the coming home of the previous year’s students and the new freshmen. If we are going to throw a homecoming, we are going to welcome home the students of Perry with a theme that corresponds with the coming home of this generation. We are going to welcome a new year at Perry high school.
