Yates Hates: Meaningless “Console Wars”
Historically, we have had wars and conflicts because of religious ideas, civil injustice, organizations with immoral intentions, and corrupt forms of government. Now, we’ve progressed into the online battleground of the internet, where people argue and insult others about the newest generation video game consoles.
Isn’t it amazing how far humankind’s priorities have fallen?
Microsoft and Sony’s releases of their newest consoles – the Xbox One and the PS4 – has sparked a lot of debate between the two super-fans of the products. This debate is referred to as “console wars,” a glorified name given its overwhelming irrelevancy to anyone outside of the gaming community.
I understand that video games may be someone’s idea of breaking away from the grim idea of reality; However, a line needs to be drawn to keep the fictional video game universes and real life from blurring together and becoming unrecognizable.
In a scenario where super-fans of the two consoles are placed in the same room, both gamers will think of convincing arguments in favor of their console of choice. The PS4 fan might start by saying that their internet service is free while the Xbox fan might counteract it by explaining their online service has better quality. Then one will bring up a console exclusive game series and if things escalate, the debate may turn into an immature exchange of insults. A lot of these “discussions” quickly morph into childish banter.
Both of them will brag and bicker as much as they physically can. It’s not a fight worth fighting because it is over a video game; video games are not a necessity to the continuity of society or existence. Video games do not assert any real influence over society nor are they a powerful force worth arguing about. They are simply a form of entertainment not meant to be taken seriously.
