For most students who walk past the John Wrenn Stadium , it is nothing more than a high school football field. But for the teams that play on it, the field is one of the worst playing surfaces in the East Valley.
Putting your heart and soul into every game of the season means a lot to us, so we need a field that can keep up with the pace of competing at the high school level. Unfortunately, there are several problems with the field, including uneven surfaces, that make home games not only a safety hazard, but embarrassing.
“The district maintains all fields and with three-to-11 games a week, it’s tough to keep the grass rooted,” principal Dan Serrano said.
It is understandable that the conditions are terrible due to the high amount of teams trampling the field. Wouldn’t the installation of new sod or some sort of artificial grass help with the quality of the field?
“Even though with turf, it requires little to no maintenance, the cost of it would be in the range of 800,000 to a million dollars just to install,” Serrano said.
With constant seasons of play without a break or re-seeding, the field has never had it easy. However, this cannot be the only factor.
“When Perry was first opened, there was no ground layer of sod put down. This caused the grass that was placed in to uproot and wither away, leaving us with the field we have today,” Serrano said.
That field was nothing more than a mud pit by the end of the soccer season.
CUSD has to make it a point to provide a safe surface for football and soccer. Otherwise, they’re saying that players have to deal with it and delve into each season with expectations to dominate their oppositions regardless of a field that is working against them.
