The closer December 21, 2012 gets, the louder people are screaming ‘the sky is falling!’ Theories have been conducted that give people the suspicion that in four days, the world will end.
Theories like the Mayan Calendar have people high strung, since the mayan calendar ends on that day.
Although people believe the Mayan calendar predicts total world destruction, what many people are shy of knowing is that Mayans did not account for leap years. If the mayans had accounted for leap years the world would have ended 16 months ago.
What scared people even more is the realistic movie ‘2012’ which came out in 2009 and scared people beyond belief. And it worries people even more to think that Superstorm Sandy that flooded the east coast is just the beginning, which is similar to director Roland Emmerich’s idea of mass destruction.
For many people 2012 and the theory that it is accompanied by, is just a joke to pass along the time. Tweets about dying soon are all but a laugh. This fandom seems to be pushed not by accuracy but the laugh factor it entitles.
The heinous predictions that the destruction of the world is near, which can not be a proven fact until the deadline of the world, causes fear in people’s souls.
Past accusations of the worlds demise have caused nothing but chaos and an increase in sales for all consumer goods. People will believe anything that higher powers tell them, so manufacturers will make the world at a stand still right after the doomsday believers crowd to stores for a black-friday-like stock up on “necessary action kits.”
For any further thought of world extermination would nothing but a waste of time. The theories that are being spawned will continue with the years as the world grows older. The lack of caring and total seriousness put into these theories that are continuously brought up several times every year only to make it a pop culture prank.
So lock your doors, and say goodbye to your loved ones and friends this semester, only to come back again.
