Marketing 2 has been participating in a contract project for the past few weeks to benefit their marketing and business negotiation skills and give them real-world problems and solutions.
Students have been divided into 2 teams, labor and management. The project is a fun and interactive way to teach students negotiation skills and is different from a normal assignment. Marketing Teacher Rob Lange stated, “Unlike a normal class assignment…throughout the contract, the parameters are always changing.” For example, the students would find out that city taxes are increasing, or a new law has been passed which could either help or hurt their contract negotiation. This makes it so that the factors and circumstances are always changing. The students are having fun with the project overall due to it being unique for an assignment, with Lange having started the assignment three years ago.
Junior Logan Cady stated, “You have to negotiate a contract and whoever has the better contract gets the better grade.” The project is meant to encourage students to try and get a better project whilst also showing them that circumstances can always change. The contracts taught students both real-world scenarios and basic negotiation skills.
Junior Marina Rodriguez said, “The significance of the contract is to learn to come to terms of agreement with other people you may not always agree with.” This has helped Rodriguez become more confident in exchanging her opinions with her classmates. Rodriguez added, “This teaches us about negotiating by exchanging information and ideas between two different ranks of work.” The project ultimately gives students real-world responsibilities and scenarios to show them the responsibility and process that goes on in the real world.
