On Jan. 20, 2025, the United States conducted its 60th inauguration as President Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President, succeeding former President Joe Biden.
The inauguration was historic as it saw a former President be inaugurated after serving a prior term, the second time this has happened in American history. Some Americans are hopeful for Trump’s presidency as he takes office. Senior Grant Stieber stated, “It’s hoped to see inflation coming down, better border security and better national security abroad.” Stieber watched the inauguration and was pleased to see the smooth transition of power take place from one President to the next. AP US History teacher Jason Myers exclaimed, “I thought it was really neat, you could see the old administration and the new administration come together.” The inauguration was historic as it marked the second time a Presidential inauguration was held indoors due to the cold temperatures. Myers added, “This inauguration was historic primarily because it was held inside the rotunda instead of outside, which is typically where it is held.” Instead of doing an inaugural parade this year, they held an event inside the Capitol One arena in Washington D.C. where the President, his family and other key figures in his administration got the chance to speak.
Government teacher Jessica Popham elaborated, “The Constitution says the outgoing President is gone by noon meaning we have to have sworn in the new President by then.” The inauguration typically consists of special guests invited by the President-elect members of the Supreme Court and Congress. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is the one who swears in the President of the United States, representing the separation of powers in the United States as a member of the Judicial Branch swears in the head of the Executive Branch.
Ultimately the 60th inauguration of the President was historic as it oversaw the ceremony being held indoors due to severe temperatures and a previous President being sworn in again after not holding the office of the President before being inaugurated, the second time that has happened in the history of the United States.
