Plans for spring graduation

As graduation encroaches on seniors, caps, gowns, and tassels have been purchased and are ready to descend upon the football field on May 29.

With the start of the fourth quarter impeded by the coronavirus there are many questions about what will happen to the senior class. One of the most common being about graduation.

Colleges in Arizona have been postponing or making their graduations online. Arizona State University is choosing to have their Spring graduation online. According to the ASU website,” Arizona State University will be celebrating with its graduates in the 2020 Spring commencement in a virtual, online ceremony.”

However that does not mean that all of the other schools are choosing to cancel or postpone their graduation ceremonies. One of the most important things to do when in the midst of a pandemic is to stay calm. Principal Dan Serrano said,”Right now our plan is to go to ASU if we’re allowed to, they haven’t cancelled that date yet.”

As far as the future goes, Serrano is committed to giving the seniors the best shot they have. The set date for graduation is May 27th, cancelling now would be way too early.

Serrano said,” We’re waiting as long as possible to say there is no graduation.” The senior class is missing out on all of the events that StuGo had planned including prom. Serrano said, ”My advice would be to keep engaging with your teachers.”

With the coronavirus outbreak, many organizations are trying their hardest to protect people from the virus. One of the organizations is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC has put in place guidelines that should often be reviewed.

One of their suggestions is what they call “ Social Distancing”. According to the CDC “Social Distancing” is when you “Stay at least 6 feet (2 meters) from other people,

do not gather in groups, and stay out of crowded places and avoid mass gatherings.”

Although graduation is a maybe, it is still possible that the ceremony will still take place.
