One act. One shot to impress the judges and qualify for Nationals. At State One Acts on Feb. 13th, Perry Theatre Company’s cast of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee performed their one act rendition of the musical and went on to win Overall Superiors. To make this even more impressive, the cast also won State Champions for the fourth year in a row.
As the crowning jewel, the theatre company qualified for Nationals, as they have every year, and will be performing their one act of the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee there as well.
“It’s really awesome [to go to Nationals] because we put this show together in three weeks,” explains sophomore Lizzy Jensen, who plays the lead role, Olive, in the musical. Jensen and the rest of the cast are excited to qualify and perform this musical at Nationals on Jun. 19-25 at the University of Nebraska.
Perry Theatre Company is no stranger to receiving awards, especially Overall Superiors.
Earlier this Feb. at regionals, the company competed in multiple different categories and won a plethora of awards including awards in duet and solo musicals, monologues and duet acting. All those who performed and competed at regionals were awarded Overall Superiors from all the judges in each of their respective categories.
Rhea Johnston and Kelly Crawley, Peyton Flake and Brandon Hayes, Mikelle Remer and Lizzy Jensen, and Noelle Soucek and Hannah Brown all won Overall Superiors in the duet musical category.
