Debate places in Toro Classic
Last November, Perry’s debate team had more students break into final rounds than ever before at The Toro Classic while claiming first place in duet acting. “[Students] broke into [finals in] Lincoln Douglas Debate, Public Forum, Humorous Interpretation, and Dramatic Interpretation,” said Debate teacher Randy Duren.
Duet acting, won by junior Hannah Kredit and junior Lizy Jensen, “[duet acting] is two people who perform a published piece,” explained Duren. Winning first Duren said, “We were ecstatic, we jumped up and down, we felt elated.”
Preparing for a tournament takes a lot of practice and time. “We trade in sleep for more time” spoke Duren. “I have fifty students participating in different events, we’ve teamed up with theater, and they’ve helped with [certain] debates.”
On December 1, the tournament released new topics to have students debate. “Our tournament is this weekend and they have to prepare with brand new topics,” spoke Duren. “We have to go up against some of the smartest schools in the state… like Brophy.”
The weekend of December 5, debate has another tournament. “We would like to trophy which means be in the top three in at least three different categories this time,” said Duren.
