Perry dance takes on Zumbathon!
One of the most well-known groups on campus is the Perry Dance Department. With performances all throughout the year including quarterly assemblies, Winterfest, and the annual student dance production, one puma dance event stands out from the rest- Zumbathon!
““It keeps you active and it’s a fun sport to do.” Freshman Alexis Watson states on the upcoming dance event. The event is planned to take place on Saturday Sept. 6 in the PHS big gym. From 12:30 to 2:30 people of all ages are welcome to come and dance with the PHS dance department.
“We have an instructor who comes in and teaches [Zumba],” Senior Neylan Gonzales-Kyzer comments. Many of the Moveo members are looking forward to the event and are even planning to dress up.
“There’s a couple of us that like to dress up, and make that a fun thing. I know I dress up in like 80’s wear. I wore an afro last year and it’s coming back out this year.” Gonzales- Kyzer smiles at her plan.
Another dressed up member is Taylor McQuillan, who says “Last year…some of us, put on tutus and we dressed up when we did [Zumba]”. When asked if she was planning on dressing up again this year, her reply was “ We might get something out of the costume closet.”
However it’s not just tutus and 8 counts. The purpose of the Zumbathon! even is to fund raise for the Puma Dance Department.
“The goal is to fundraise for Perry Dance, for Moveo and Advanced Dance…. And at the same time having like a fun fundraiser, opposed to like a car wash or something where the people who are donating don’t get really anything out of it.” Gonzales-Kyzer states on the objective of the event.
“Most of [the profits] goes to costumes and stuff for concerts, because it is a lot of money to put on our shows. Because we have to cover costumes and props. And then… anything we need for concerts.”
So Zumbathon! is not just a fun activity for all ages, it has a purpose of being one of the only fun and active carwashes that event the donors get to enjoy.
