Eddie Basha obituary
Eddie Basha, CEO and chairman of the Bashas’ grocery chain, died Tues. Mar. 28 at the age of 75. In 1968, Basha took over the Bashas’ chain when his father passed away and left the legacy to him. Basha served on the CUSD Governing Board for 12 years and later was appointed to the State Board and the Arizona Board of Regents. Basha High was opened in 2003 in honor of his service to the school district. Basha was known for having a big heart when it came to others. Details about Basha’s death are unknown, but in a statement released by his family said he was ailing in health. The funeral was Sat. Apr. 6 at the ASU Gammage Stadium.
Debate grant through Diamondbacks
Debate recently went to a competition and came back with grant money for eleven iPad minis and 1200 Diamondbacks tickets for the Apr. 8 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The grant received, helped purchase the iPads for debate. The grant was awarded to the debate team from the Diamondbacks and University of Phoenix.The tickets were acquired with the grant to pass out to students at lunch for the Pumas to represent the school. English teacher Angela Kemp and Principal Dan Serrano will be on the field to receive the grants. The game was Apr. 8 at 6:40 between the Diamondbacks and the Pirates.
Fine arts senior showcase
The Fine Arts Senior Showcase is a night to celebrate exceptional performing and visual arts artists who have been a part of the Fine Arts Department over several years. The showcase is for those senior artists that were invited. Those senior artists that were invite were required to audition for a position in the showcase. Visual senior artists were also invited to participate to have their artwork displayed in the lobby. The showcase will be an annual event from here on out. The senior showcase is set to be held on Apr. 26 and will begins at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The senior showcase is open to the public and all are encouraged to come.
Tuition Hike
On Apr. 4, the Arizona Board of Regents approved tuition hikes at the three Arizona state universities. Students attending Arizona State University and University of Arizona will face 3 percent tuition increases, while Northern Arizona University’s incoming students will pay 5 percent more. The board unanimously approved the changes while meeting in Tucson. However immigrants here with a visa may receive a reduced tuition as they do not qualify for in-state tuition. Under the tuition increases, ASU would cost $10,002 for new resident students. UofA will charge resident’s $10,391 next year. Tuition and fees for new resident students at NAU would total $9,738 next year. The school offers a guaranteed-tuition plan for incoming freshmen that freezes rates for four years. The board has also approved increases of up to 2.8 percent in fees for residence halls, student and family housing and meal plans.
