Being in high school, a student may find themselves overwhelmed with all the different personalities going from class to class. Out of all of these personalities, a PHS teacher is the last one would expect to be original and spontaneous. But, there is one teacher whose lifestyle encompasses all those traits and more: Jessica Pullen.
Pullen originally started out school majoring in law and child advocacy. In her years before she started law school, she worked as an aid in a special education elementary classroom. “I realized that if I was going to be an advocate for kids, it wasn’t going to be in an office somewhere; it was going to be in a classroom,” Pullen said. It was then that she decided to become a teacher.
Jessica Pullen is in her 12th year of teaching, and with every year she makes more students exceptional learners. “In terms of teaching style I feel like I had a lot of really terrible teachers growing up, and I try to run my everyday teaching as a list of what not to do,” said Pullen, who teaches Honors world history, AP government, and her favorite subject, AP human geography.
As an AP teacher, her record is almost spotless, with the majority of her students scoring at least a three (out of five) on their AP tests. Through gossip between other AP human geography teachers, it remains clear that Pullen’s scores are by far pretty high ranking in CUSD. Her students have little but high remarks when talking about their loving teacher. “She is very enthusiastic and finds new ways to teach, so its not boring and interesting to learn,” says junior Shelby Evans, who was an AP student of Pullen last year. “She is always there for us and easy to talk to and open to everything.”
Pullen is also a club advisor for the newly-founded club, Block Day Barz, a club where students can express themselves through freestyle rap. “I thought it was a really positive outlet for student energy, and I wanted to help out with that,” Pullen said.
Everyday Pullen tries her best to leave her students better than she found them, with not only a strong understanding of subjects, but as better human beings overall. With her wicked hairstyles, foolproof teaching, and rap game, Pullen will continue to light up campus for years to come.
