Junior Josh Andreason takes a unique approach to photography. Instead of utilizing the quick and convenient ways to take photos that smartphones provide, Andreason dedicates his time and effort to using cameras, lenses, and their complex settings to take breathtaking photos of the stars.
This journey to becoming an astrophotographer began online, through youtube videos. He says that “you see someone else take a photo and you’re like ‘oh, this is something I can do.’” Since then, he has worked hard to develop an understanding of not just the stars, but the equipment he uses to image them. This understanding of photographing nebulae has come in steps and as he’s gathered both equipment and knowledge of how to correctly use it, he’s been able to image the stars in a way that few could. “It comes in pieces,” he says, “If I were to get it all at once, first of all it would be way too expensive, and second of all I wouldn’t be able to figure everything out at once…”
Andreason plans to continue taking these photos recreationally because of the sense of accomplishment it brings him. He says, “I suppose it’s kind of addicting. You take photos on your smartphone all the time, but being able to take more time and effort to make your photos mean something to you leaves a feeling of accomplishment.” As he continues to look to the stars, and take that time and effort to capture them, Andreason’s accomplishment will only grow.
