Teacher, coach and Perry enthusiast, Brian Butson impacts students’ lives daily.
This year he is taking on many roles, including freshman/junior varsity football coach, varsity girls basketball assistant coach, and Brief Calculus teacher.
As a football coach, he feels very successful. “We ended up 6-2 which was pretty awesome for us,” Butson said. The team lost only to Queen Creek and Basha, both of which were tough losses.
In preparation for next season, Butson said, “I want to try to start getting to know the freshman earlier on and get a lot more things established in the spring so that we can hit the ground running.” He is shaping the boys attitudes and improving their skills to become better football players.
Currently, Butson is gearing up for basketball season. This year he has officially moved up to the position of assistant varsity coach.
The team is looking forward to the new season with Butson. Junior Rachel Amerine said, “he really pushes us.”
“I like his coaching style; I feel like he really knows what he is doing,” junior Taylor Slevin comments.
Butson also plays an essential role in the new Brief Calculus math curriculum that was introduced this year. Butson teamed up with fellow math teacher Julie Chesley to help everything run smoothly since it is new to both teachers and students. The lessons involve real-world situations that high school students understand.
“I like Brief Calc because it is things that you potentially can be faced with,” Butson said, “it’s relevant.”
Butson is surely dedicated to teaching and coaching and is looking forwards to many years to come.
