The orchestra students recently returned from their bi-annual trip to Disneyland, where they had the opportunity to perform, attend a professional concert, and experience the park’s attractions. For many the trip was not just a fun getaway, but a rewarding experience that showcased their years of dedication to music.
Dr. Dopp, the orchestra director, described the trip as an enriching experience from start to finish. “We left Perry really early on Friday morning (2 a.m.) and traveled by charter bus to downtown Los Angeles,” she said. “We attended a live Los Angeles Philharmonic concert in the Walt Disney Hall near the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. We saw an amazing performance by Augustin Hadelich, who played the Tchaikovsky violin concerto. We also saw conductor Joana Mallwitz lead the symphony in performing the Schubert Symphony No. 9, all from memory! It was a memorable event to hear” she stated.
Senior Emma Martin reflected on the trip highlighting the unique opportunities it provided. “The trip was amazing as always. It was even better being there with everyone else” Martin said. “We had to get up early on Friday morning to make it to the LA Philharmonic, where we got to witness one of the greatest composers and violin soloists ever.” Martin loved being able to experience such a unique event.
The early start in classical performance tested the student’s ability to stay awake, but Martin still appreciated the experience. “We were all really tired, and it was lullaby music, and half of us were falling asleep. It was still such an amazing opportunity” she said.
After the concert students spent time in Downtown Disney before heading to Disneyland, the following day. They had free time to enjoy rides, explore the park, and create lasting memories with friends.
One of the most anticipated parts of the trip was the Imagination Campus Workshop where students had a chance to step into a Disney recording studio. “We got to record three songs, the Emperor’s New Groove, the Up theme, and the Marvel Cinematic intro,” Martin said. “It was an experience I never thought I would get to do. I’m a big Disney fanatic so getting to go backstage and be a part of something like that was just amazing.”
For senior Will Burger, the trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that reinforced why he loved being in an orchestra. “It means a lot because you don’t get this opportunity otherwise,” Burger said. “Having the chance to go to this fantastic place and play music you never get to play anywhere else. It’s something really special.”
Will has been playing the viola since fifth grade acknowledges the hard work it took to reach this point. “It took a lot of dedication,” he said, “Some years I even took multiple orchestra classes, but we made it.”
Beyond the musical opportunities, students cherish the time spent with their peers. “This is one ride we’re in a little round boat going down the Rapids and going down that with my friends it was just a once-in-a-lifetime thing” Burger said.
For orchestra students, the Disney trip was more than just a performance. It was a chance to bond, celebrate their passion for music, and take part in an unforgettable experience that allowed them to showcase their hard work and dedication.
