Sharing a passion for music, Getaway Driver, composed of five marching band members – Carvor Davenport, Sam Myers, Dax Gardner, Dominic Gomez, and Phoenix Yoder – have sought to pursue their own album. With only five to six original songs, the band hopes to expand on their discography.
The band was started over a year ago with Gomez, the drummer, pitching the idea to the first members of the band, Seniors Davenport, who plays bass, and Myers, the vocalist. Later, other members, Seniors Gardner, who plays lead guitar, and Phoenix Yoder, the trumpet player, joined as well.
Thus far, they have mostly covered music similar to Joyce Manor and Weezer, but their own songs can be labeled as Midwest emo and pop punk. Myers noted, “We started writing stuff when we started the band. It’s just that a lot of [the songs] aren’t polished” In the process of creating music, Myers and Davenport typically write the lyrics and all group members may come up with the rhythm and melody together.
The band admitted to having a scheduling problem due to their other commitments. Recently, members have held frequent practices in order to release music and with new goals in mind, consistent practices are necessary.
Additionally, they hope to branch out from school events and to try to perform live at venues. Gardner mentioned, “There’s a place called Sozo which allows musicians to come and play. And then after that, we were looking at doing house shows.” For reference, the Sozo Coffeehouse in Chandler doubles as a cafe and venue for live music.
However, with a majority of the band graduating this year, they are uncertain about where Getaway Driver will lead to, but they intend to work together for as long as time allows.
