Unified beyond the playing field
Perry A Capella club recently hosted a concert to raise money for Unified Sports. Principal Serrano relays the results of the event, “They had about 90 people there that paid five dollars each.”. Included in the audience that attended was the Perry wrestling team which actually participated in one of the ensembles. Brett Mullenaux, a member of the A Capella club says, “We had some wrestlers come out so we are grateful for that. Justin Nelson and Dustin Loghead were some of the seniors involved”.
It was one of the first fundraisers that had been done for this program. “This is the first time A Capella Club has ever become a thing, this is the first year it has ever been created so this was the first charity event”, Mullenaux added, “We had a great turnout. We got somebody to donate $200 dollars, just a donation for a single person. We had two special needs kids co-hosting as well.”
This event was able to raise awareness for the Unified Sports program because some people still don’t know what it is or what they do. Mrs Bottcher, the assistant coach to the team was able to comment on the purpose of Unified Sports “The purpose of unified sports is to give every student the opportunity to participate in high school sports just like anyone else.” It’s a way to include everyone no matter their disability in a normal environment.
Not only is it great for the athletes but also the partners. “It gives you a new perspective. Everybody always thinks certain things about special needs people but this gives you a new perspective on the kids because you never really see them throughout the school day.” Overall, Perry continues to include everyone and does a good job at making sure their students have the best experience while on campus.
