Disney’s ‘Frozen’ to belt it’s way to the stage
“Do you want to build a Broadway show?” Disney has answered that question with a resounding “Yes we do”.
Their latest princess endeavor, “Frozen”, has busted box office records to become one of their highest grossing animated features, second to “The Lion King”, and the soundtrack has skyrocketed to No. 1 on iTunes’ best-selling albums list.
The transition seems obvious, considering the amount of Broadway talent attached to the film, though none of them are currently attached to the project. The composers, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, have written for musicals such as “Avenue Q” and “The Book of Mormon”. The cast is almost entirely made up of theatre vets: Idina Menzel (‘Wicked’), Jonathan Groff (“Spring Awakening”), Josh Gad (“The Book of Mormon”), Kristen Bell (“The Crucible”), and Santino Fontana “’Cinderella”).
Disney confirmed the development of a stage adaption to playbill.com, but did not specify a time frame. CEO Bob Iger told Fortune Magazine that they are not demanding speed, but excellence.
It was not confirmed whether the stage show had plans for Broadway or would follow the lead of other shows produced by Disney like “Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular” and “Finding Nemo: The Musical”, which are only shown inside the Disney theme parks.
The movie’s success also has led to Disney executives to begin planning themed attractions at the parks, including possibly replacing the Maelstrom boat ride attraction on the Norway pavilion at the EPCOT Center in Florida.
Several executives have commented on the film’s marketing appeal, which could definitely mean more products, park attractions, and possibly sequels, making sure that the film’s future is definitely bright.
