British up-and-coming pop star, Conor Maynard, has made his way into the hearts of young girls with his new album, “Contrast.”
Originally a cover artist, 20 year- old Maynard co-wrote all but two of the songs on his 12 track album. Because of Maynard’s instant climb to fame, many are left questioning if he, in fact, is the new Bieber? He was discovered on YouTube and signed to a record label Parlophone which also singed famous artists like, ColdPlay, John Lennon, and even The Beatles.
Maynard’s debut single in the U.S “Vegas Girl,” is the top 40 track on the album. The song is very catchy and can and will make its way into a variety of parties. Along with being so catchy, there is a unique aspect added to the back track, a subtle yet present beatboxing.Towards the middle of the song, he harmonizes with himself during a nice acapella break before returning to the top 40 beat once again. It returns once again at the end of the song as it fades out.
Along with helping Maynard get signed to a record label, he also helped by providing a collab track – “Turn Around” – on Maynard’s debut album. From the beginning of the song there is a total NeYo vibe to the song making it obvious that he had something to do with the track. As it is Maynard’s album, he does start off the song in the first verse but when the second verse comes along, NeYo gets to show off his own voice. Although Maynard has a nice voice, he lacks the climbing vocal intensity that NeYo brings to the track. However, towards the end, Maynard seems to get more confident in his voice before going back to his softer voice to end the track. Their voices harmonize and flow well together at places such as the bridge and any time during the song.
One of the more ballad-y tunes on the album, “Glass Girl” is also set to a soft hip hop beat. Although there is a beat, it is very simple making it easy to convert to an acoustic or even acapella version of the song. The theme is the classic break up song because of the shady actions of the significant other. Towards the end, there is another unique addition made of rocky guitar riffs. Again, his voice flows really well with the track.
Joined by another upcoming british star, Rita Ora, “Better Than You” is a great mix of his style and hers without being all over the place. Ora is a powerhouse of vocals which helps balance out Maynards softer vocals for the harder hip hop beat track. This track yet again can and will make its way into many clubs and top 40 mixes.
Overall, this album is definitely worth the $7.99 pricetag for its top 40 beats and its star studded collaborations.
