When you think ‘Life of Pi’, it is most likely math that first swarms into your head. But with this wonderfully composed film, Life of Pi, it is far from math you are thinking of. The only scene in the entire movie dedicated to math is when Piscine is dubbed his nickname, Pi.
Starting out, ‘Pi” did not look promising. The movie took the time to introduce the characters and their past, to really get the audience to understand what was happening. When you go to the movies, you almost come to expect the movie to just jump right in, no background first, not really any introduction.
“Life of Pi’ was surprising in the way that it captures the audience from beginning to end. There is no complicated storyline to follow, there is only complex and relatable characters, much like ourselves. Pi is a relatable 16 yo. that captures your feelings and leaves you feeling sorry for him, which is a far cry from how the audience should really feel.
After the unfortunate events of Pi’s life, he makes it hard to not feel bad, but Pi has everything in control. Pi is capable of taming a wild beast, capable of surviving 227 days lost at sea. He is a fighter, and in that sense the audience finds it even harder to not feel bad for him. Pi’s situation is unfortunate, and he does know how to survive, but you still see the weakness and the sorrow Pi is experiencing and you feel bad.
The flurry of mixed emotions keeps you on your toes throughout the movie. By the end of the movie, you were leaving either sorrowful and in grief or you were joyful about how it all turned out.
Although some of the scenes where farfetched and hard to believe, it did not keep you from understanding in the end what had just happened. You were not left questioning the events that had just taken place, nor were you wondering why it had just happened or what significance it played.
The movie showed the mystical and wonderful ocean that not many get a chance to see, along with showing the dark and dangerous side that can kill in a second. The scenes left a beautiful picture and a newfound respect for nature.
During a few scenes, there could be a question in your mind about the ethics of what events had taken place, before your eyes, only moments ago.
The overall theme of the movie was not accepting defeat. Not only that, Pi learned that your greatest enemy can be your greatest chance for survival. By the end of the movie, you will be wanting and craving more; more beauty, more danger, more story.
