Point/Counterpoint: Are Finals Good for students or Bad for Students
January 19, 2018
Are semester finals good or bad? And should they be worth twenty percent of the grade. The question if stress and anxiety is a good reason to not like final exams or is it just an excuse among student.
Final Exams are a Nuisance to Students, but a Necessity to Future Success
Every Semester Students across the country prepare for their final exams in pursuit of a passing grade in their various classes. Teenagers despise the tests due to the stress and anxiety they cause, but they do not recognize the impact they can have on their future.
Final Exams provide students an idea of possible success in college and studies have shown that the preparation of tests can increase a students overall knowledge tremendously.
“Recent evidence suggests that simply telling students that there will be a cumulative final may enhance their learning”, according to Nate Kornell Ph.D.
As a student I am particularly not a fan of finals, but the fact that they don’t last long and can provide me with future college success is appealing and makes me optimistic for future tests, besides just passing.
A common opinion for finals is that they are “stressful” and “agonizing”, but if the student knows what he or she is learning they should really not be too difficult. The tests usually only last two days, so it will not be a situation for very long.
Parents have even voiced their support for final exams, because they believe it will provide their child with a sense of responsibility and determination to succeed at something.
According to Julie Scagell she has made it clear she does not want her child to take test retakes at all, especially on the final test. “While many parents and educators disagree with evaluating a student’s performance with just grades, studies show that an overall grade is a better predictor of college success than test performance.”
This is important because semester tests usually measure up to 20% of a students final grade, so the worse a students grade the less likely they will do well in college or a college accepts he or she. That is why it is vital for a student to take the tests seriously before it destroys their hopes.
Semester Exams can also teach students vital studying habits for prominent tests like the ACT or PSAT, which the majority of the colleges in the United States require to be admitted into their school.
Final Exams are critical for students success because it can measure future success and provides incredible studying skills. The amount of stress students (like myself), go through on finals week is noticeable, But the impact they can make on a students future overshadow all of the potential negatives completely.
Finals May Lead to Success but Cause Extra Stress For many students
Every 18-20 weeks students are busy studying and stressing out about finals which weigh twenty percent of their grades which is no small factor, it can determine whether or not you pass a class. Also students need to study for all of their classes and there is only 24 hours in a day and studying for them takes a few hours for each class.
Final exams are one of the most stressful times of the year for students whether its studying for the tests or if a student can’t find material to help them study. Which for some students can determine whether or not they pass the class or keep the grade they have. Which can cause a lot of stress for students who have good grades because if they have a 90% in the class they have to score a 90% on the final to keep that anything lower drops it and there’s no getting it back.
Even though finals may cause a lot of stress for students as long as they are organized they should have all or most the materials they need to help them study and have success on the final. All the student needs to do is keep track of their things and make sure they attend class everyday.
The problem with final exams have a huge part on students grade is many students have a life outside of school so it may be hard for them to make time for studying. For example, some students work and some have families or other important things in life that they have to worry about and when it’s late at night people are tired from work or running around all day they don’t want to have to study for finals they would much rather go to sleep. However they can’t because they have a test worth twenty percent of their grade in the following days.
Final exams shouldn’t be worth as much as they are they should be worth a regular test grade the only thing that weight of the 20 percent on the grade is good for is causing students stress and students having to study countless hours so they can keep the grade they have or move up a letter grade. Also when students have four or five classes and all the tests are worth 20 percent of the grade many students will feel too much pressure and some will shut down.
