Point/Counterpoint: Today’s Music
December 15, 2016
As music evolves alongside with each generations likes and dislikes, music producers scramble to rush their artists to make the kind of music everyone wants to hear. However, is stripping artists from their basic morals of music, the best solution?
Society is praising “un-talented” artists
The present day music being praised by the public, can be summarized by two disdainful synonyms: bland and tasteless. Not to mention, many of the artists in the top 20 charts, lack even a good voice – but, wait a second, is that not what being famous for a singing voice is all about? Why are artists being glorified, when they do not have talent in showcasing their voice, but a talent in auto-tune?
In the 80’s and 90’s, it took more than catchy words, a sweet smile, an auto-tuned voice, and a SoundCloud account to become known and adored by the public. Nirvana, Def Leopard, and Bon Jovi, for example, all contain the two foundations of music: instrumentals and vocals. Songs needed a drummer, guitarist, and pianist, assisting the artist, in order for success. The vocals sounded as spectacular on and off stage, the singers burning with a passion that inspired the public to learn how to play an instrument, or take singing lessons. The only lesson being taught nowadays, is that you do not require talent or practice to become famous in the music industry.
Artists should not be praised, when their “music” comes from a computer, and their voices pour out of a synthesized machine.
It is hard to deny that current music is topping the charts, because teenagers and young adults are listening to it at every given opportunity. This is partially because, it is a reflection on society. However, society should be striving for integrity and moral values, not racial slurs and lack of respect towards women that is taught in today’s music. Children are raised with the lesson the music is giving, which is negative and leaving a bad influence.
It is a disgrace, that female artists, for example, Ke$ha and Britney Spears are the figures of today’s music. Britney Spears ‘Slave 4 U’ and Ke$ha’s ‘Take it Off’ are soulless, computerized hits, without any moral value or vocals.
The definition of music, is the vocal or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of harmony. Previously, it required instrumentals and a passionate voice to become successful in the music industry. Now, all you need is a computer and speakers to make your mark. Tasteless and bland, today’s music is lacking integrity and talent.
Same old tune, just a new beat
Trying to accept that 2016 is coming to an end is hard to grasp. And while everyone’s getting ready with their resolutions they hope to,but never actually accomplish, one subject remains controversial, music.
Yes 2016 will definitely be remembered for more important matters, but it also was a wild ride for music. But why so much hate on the chart toppers of today’s radical jams?
Today’s music reflects today’s day and age just like it always has in eras before, today’s age is upbeat and all about doing things just for the fun of it. Not all music has to have heartfelt ballads, sometimes it’s just for pure enjoyment and getting into a party mood. And even then there are still plenty of meaningful songs out there today you just have to know where to look, just because you turn on the radio and don’t like the first sound you hear doesn’t mean you have to freak out and tweet about your frustration with today’s music.
Every era of music has its high and lows, Am I the only one who remembers Gangnam style by Psy? There have always been songs just as moronic as some of today’s hits, just as well as there are still those artist with real instruments and real morals.
Twenty-One Pilots, a musical duo who blew up this year may be remembered for their funky, yet overplayed song Stressed out but they actually have thought out lyrics, they speak the truth just like in there song Lane boy “don’t trust a perfect person and don’t trust a song that’s flawless”
While it may be an easy scapegoat to blame the artist for the content they release, who are we to call them out on it? After all, we are the ones listening. There is no question that music is an industry. It’s all about supply and demand, face it, people today just want to dance and whether that be to same robotic beeps and boops, so be it.
For the most part today’s music may all sound similar but that’s what selling if you have a problem then change the station there are plenty of a variety of music out there. There is no point in trying to change the natural vibe of this generation’s sound.
