Winter Sports preview: girls soccer

Two years ago the varsity girls soccer team lost to Desert Mountain preventing them from becoming the state champions. Last year was a repeat, but this year the team hopes to change that. They plan to beat Desert Mountain at their first game on Dec. 1.

Losing that game last season has pushed the girls this year to work harder and accomplish their goal of making state. Maryn Behling, a senior on varsity for the past two years, said “We‘re bigger, faster, and stronger so we keep growing. We know we’re the better team.” Although they practice after school, it is not the only time they practice.

Most of the varsity players are in the soccer locker class. Being together all year has brought the team together even further. Behling said “The biggest part is us being together and having better chemistry. We are definitely super close.” That fact has improved their teamwork and success against their opposing team: time.

Many soccer players are in the soccer locker, on the school team, and on a club team all in November. Behling said “you just have to focus, it’s less social time, but it’s worth it in the end because we are doing what we love.”

For soccer players, November is packed as the players are kicked down the field in hopes of making their goal: state. The only problem is balancing those with school. Shaylynn Uyeshiro, a sophomore on varsity, said “You have to balance your homework and whatever time you have.  [During] the extra time in your classes you do your homework because that’s the only time you have.” Those skills will last a lifetime. Coach Roberts, coach of the girls team for the past year, said “It’s a skill they’ll need for the rest of their lives.”
