Pumas bring spirit for awareness week

Pumas are very good about remembering to dress up for spirit week and show their school pride. However, will awareness week get the same amount of attention? Awareness week is an opportunity for the service clubs at school to raise awareness and money for different types of cancer. Five service clubs are responsible for setting up fun events during lunch to get students to donate  to the American Cancer Society and become aware of the seriousness of different types of cancers.

SHS President Bethany Kalscheur was the organizer for awareness week and says she thought of doing an awareness week because “We have so many clubs dedicated to community service so why don’t we try to increase participation in our clubs and increase some enthusiasm on campus.

Monday was childhood cancer awareness day. Students were asked to wear purple to show their support  while NHS organized the Emery Miller bear toss. Students during lunch had to donate to play. Tuesday students were asked to wear white in recognition of lung cancer. The Paws for a Cause club organized a ring toss game where students had to donate a dollar for a chance to win the soda of their choice.

“We are all just really excited to work together” said Kalschuer “and to try and make a fun experience that hopefully lasts after we graduate.”

The clubs continued throughout the week with Wednesday recognizing Melanoma and students wear black. The Spanish Honor Society hosted the fun sombrero skill ball activity. Thursday Key Club took over and had students play the game poke-a-pumpkin and wear blue to bring colon cancer awareness. Lastly friday was wear pink in recognition to breast cancer as it is breast cancer awareness month. FACES club hosted pumpkin golf in spirit of fall. All games were a pay to play giving donations to the American Cancer Society.
