Aviation Spirit Week and Assembly: Last of the Year for Some, Last Forever for Seniors

Each year, a group of fresh faces is reluctantly welcomed on campus, while another bids their final goodbye. Experiences like these would typically separate the upperclassmen from the lower, but the Prom spirit week and assembly unites them all.

With every passing year, spirit week allows freshmen and sophomores to enjoy the nostalgia before the last day, without crashing the seniors’ last party. The 2014/15 school year created a “Secret Garden,” theme for Prom, with a series of creative sub-themes to add on for spirit week. This consisted of Disney day, neon day, Earth day, USA day, and the well-renowned, Red Hot day.

Although last year’s idea was received, there is no direct correlation as to how one theme outweighs the other. This year’s spirit week is based off of the, “Aviation Affair” Prom theme, containing nerd, camo, twin, tie-dye, and Red Hot day.

Senior StuGo member Isaiah Patterson explains, “Participation between year to year varies and is based solely on the students. I don’t think comparing this year to last year can determine which is better.”

Each concept is planned with the presumed reaction from each student, “A committee is created of a few of the members of StuGo and they team up with the assembly committee to come line the spirit days up with the theme of the assembly,” Patterson says. “What they come up with is based off of suggestions from the student body and ideas that other StuGo members bring to the table during the class discussion.”

This week of festivity is never fully finished until the Prom assembly on Red Hot day. For all, this is the final, all-inclusive celebration of the year, but for seniors, the assembly marks the conclusion of their time at PHS.

Senior and varsity cheerleader Kaylee Mann reflects, [on her last performance], “Our coaches choreographed this last routine.

“It’s bittersweet, I’m anxious to move on, but sad to leave this all behind.

“We’ve had more seniors and more experience, and you’ll see it in this performance. We have had so much fun this year!” teammate and senior Megan Matthews adds.

Although the entire school will not be together for the assembly, it will be memorable for each class at PHS, especially for the seniors. “We have something special in store for the last Prom and senior assembly.” Patterson says. “We can’t wait for everyone to find out all about it!”
