Corey Can Do It All

Parker Corey truly is a man of many trades. Not only does he produce music, he films and directs music videos while also recording his own vocals.

Production, an often overlooked aspect of music, has become prevalent in the hip hop world. Corey, a senior, began producing the summer before his sophomore year.

Although his production work generally involves mixing and mastering, Corey is also learning the piano. “I wouldn’t be able to just go up and play on a stage,” he said, “but I do use chords in the background for songs.”

Harvey Dent, a product of the hip hop trio Injury Reserve, is Corey’s favorite released track. He is the producer for the group, and actually filmed the Harvey Dent music video along with other videos.

Under the name Still Pending, another small group in which Corey creates music is the jazz band 1300 North. Fellow senior Caleb Ragatz plays saxophone while Corey provides vocals. “The name is the beginning of the address of my grandpa’s dentist office we record at,” Corey explained, “we just put some tables and equipment in an empty room they weren’t using.”

Their music, largely influenced by jazz and hip hop, is “party music that is also conscious” according to Corey.

Although newer music from producers like J-Dilla and Kanye West are his preference, Corey also listens to and samples from old records. “I just get the mixed record packs from Zia,” he said.

Corey and his partners, known as Nate Richie and Steppa J Groggs, drew inspiration from the documentary “A Tribe Called Quest.”

The name was created by Richie, who believes hip hop is on “injury reserve” and they are going to bring it back. With a vintage style that has gained local popularity, hip hop could be off the bench very soon.

Though each song usually takes between one and two weeks to complete, Corey is breaking ground in multiple disciplines throughout the entire process.
