Homecoming royalty: a tradition that unites the school

Everything you need to know about HC Royalty and Spirit Week

Homecoming is finally here – this is one of the biggest events in high school. It’s a time when students come together to celebrate their school. This whole week has been building up our school spirit for the football game and dance, as well as our excitement for the year to come.

For some students the anticipation of Homecoming Royalty is growing, while others may be wondering why Homecoming Royalty is such a rite of passage. Well Daisy

Ramirez and I, Elisa Thomas, have found the answer. We asked Senior Daniel Estrada, a member of homecoming committee, his take on all the hype. He believes that Royalty is recognition from your peers. To him, the friendly people that are more involved in school usually receive this honor. “It shows the staff and student body that you’re well known, but not popular. Popularity has a bad connotation.”

We also talked with Taylor LeSueur, who is running for Homecoming King, and he shared his thoughts with us. To him all dances are a rite of passage. He encourages everyone to go to Homecoming and Prom at least once! “I feel like high school is a lot more than just getting good grades and doing sports. It’s also about having fun and making memories!” I could not agree more.

Lerina Johnson, instructor of StuGo, gave us the rundown on how Homecoming Royalty nominations occur. She said that anyone can nominate their friends, and then StuGo puts whoever receives the most nominations into a ballot. From there anyone can vote for the couples. “It’s all you guys, we don’t nominate anyone at all!” Did you get out there and vote for your favorite couple?

She also let us in on what happens behind the scenes involving Spirit Week and Homecoming Royalty. She said that StuGo tries to make spirit week something all students will enjoy, and over the years, she has seen more spirit and participation. She believes Spirit Week really connects the school, and that Homecoming should be something students can look back on with fond memories.

Daniel Estrada has also seen the traditions go from formal, to very exciting! He believes Homecoming is a special and bonding night. “We all have fun and I can say even people who don’t prefer dancing, end up having fun at the end of the night!” Hopefully this year’s Homecoming will be one for the books.
