Campus Expansion

As students begin to register for next year, a big question comes to mind, where is everyone going to go? Perry has been growing since it opened in 2007, and next year the freshman class is expected to be around 750 students according to Principal Dan Serrano.

With traveling teachers and the bus barn already in place, PHS is running out of space for students and teachers.

“This school was built for 2,800 students and we are at 2,900,” Serrano said.

According to Serrano, the solution is, “We are going to build a two story building that butts up to the wing next to the F-building.”

The money for the new building did not come from the override passing. “No. That override passing is MNO money, its not capital money. The district has some capital put away for that,” Serrano said.

The two-story building will have 23 classrooms and will move all CTE classes, including Culinary, T.V. Productions, Fashion, and  Graphic Design. It will also house a school store run by DECA.

According to Serrano, the school store will sell everything from PHS apparel to snacks and school supplies.

The new building will house two science labs, two full kitchens for culinary, and five regular classrooms.Brian Bernier, the graphic design teacher, looks forward to the CTE teachers being in the same place. Bernier believes the new building will change the way they film,  “We will have a separate studio space so we will be able to shoot things in studio in class more easily.” Which will improve the sound quality of the videos.

Culinary is expecting large changes as well, “The new building will give culinary two new kitchens,” Jacob Carter, a two-year culinary student said,”[Culinary] has been sharing the kitchen with the lunch staff.” The two new kitchens will remove confusion between the lunch staff and will allow students to get a more realistic view of working in a real life kitchen, Carter went on to say.

The new building will provide the space needed for the new students next year, as well as fixing the room issues administration currently has this year.

According to a prediction by Serrano, “We will have 15 regular classrooms for teachers that have to travel [currently].”

However, changes are not just limited to classrooms, they extend to the parking lots around campus. With more students coming to PHS in the coming years, parking spaces will become highly limited. With expansion happening, there is room for more parking spaces for students and teachers.

”We are starting to open [auditorium] spots up,” Serrano said.

These new spots will be used for more student parking, as there is currently a waiting list for parking spots.

As opposed to the many other changes, Serrano promises the extra students will not affect lunch times or schedules. The addition of tables and creative ways for serving food will help compensate for the increase of students in future years.

Campus expansion comes at a price. The goal is to start construction in the beginning of March and finish by the start of next school year, but if it is not complete by then, students and administration will have to make due until it is finished.
