For some, tape sculptures are not only tradition, but are a part of them, a part they would hate to lose. But as time goes on, art teacher Sharon Biemond finds the task becoming more and more worrisome. “It is questionable [whether or not the tape sculptures will be continued next year]. The project may change and be more of a concept based project,” Biemond said on the rumor of tape sculptures being canceled.
And although this is just that, nothing more than a rumor. Biemond feels the task growing weary and would like to try some new things. “I do want to do new projects [next year]; I just have not decided what to do or how to do it.” This change could be more than just change for some students. Senior Alexis Becquart said that he would be disappointed if the tape sculptures were to be canceled for upcoming years. “Yeah, [if I were not graduating], I would be disappointed because they were fun to make and I like the reactions of people seeing them on campus,” Becquart said.
Not only is Becquart disappointed about the chance of canceling tape sculptures, but senior Gabby Ramirez is a bit disappointed, “Yeah. I think the tape sculptures add to the campus. It makes it not as boring.” And even though Ramirez and Becquart are against the change, there are some who would not mind saying goodbye, due to problems faced, to a tradition. “Yeah. I think it is a fun project, but some don’t turn out as we would like,” Senior Scott Hill says, “I do not think I would be disappointed because we sometimes run into problems with making the tape sculptures.” Although the tape sculptures do not always turn out as we would like, Hill would be somewhat disappointed to Biemond saying goodbye to a Perry tradition. As Perry progresses and improves on things on campus, so do the teachers and staff of Perry.
And although Biemond is growing weary of overseeing the production of tape sculptures each year, she feels that getting rid of tape sculptures would be like getting rid of a piece of Perry, a piece which could not be replaced by something else. But, since the rumor of tape sculptures is just a rumor, future students will not have to worry about the change too much because it sounds like Biemond will not be overseeing a change in the line-up for her sculpture students.
